Blog - Bridging the gap

How private home visit Physiotherapy can bridge the gap with NHS services.

As I also work for the NHS I understand the frustrations of waiting for community services which is one of the reasons I set up SafeMotion Physiotherapy at home.

Private physiotherapy can play an important role in supporting patients while they are waiting for NHS community physiotherapy. It is not a replacement for NHS services, but it can help prevent deterioration, improve function, and provide early guidance during what may otherwise be a prolonged wait.

Some key reasons include:

  • Earlier assessment and treatment: Private physiotherapy often allows patients to be seen much sooner, enabling earlier identification of problems and prompt management.
  • Preventing symptoms from worsening: Without appropriate advice or treatment, pain, stiffness, weakness, and reduced mobility may progress. Early physiotherapy can help maintain function and reduce the risk of further decline.
  • Maintaining independence: Exercises, education, and tailored rehabilitation can help patients stay active and continue with daily activities, reducing the impact of their condition while they wait.
  • Personalised rehabilitation: Private appointments often allow more time for individual assessment, goal setting, and progression of treatment plans based on the patient's specific needs.
  • Education and self-management: Patients learn about their condition, recovery expectations, and how to safely manage symptoms, helping them feel more confident and engaged in their rehabilitation.
  • Supporting recovery after injury or surgery: Delays in rehabilitation can sometimes affect recovery. Early intervention may help restore strength, movement, and confidence more effectively.
  • Continuity of care: Treatment can continue until NHS community physiotherapy becomes available (or work alongside), helping patients avoid long periods without professional support. If patients later transfer to NHS care, a summary of assessment findings, treatment provided, and progress can be shared (with the patient's consent) to support continuity.

For some of my patients, once their NHS physiotherapy becomes available they will transfer over as understandably they are entitled to NHS treatment. Some decide to stay but I always ensure patients and their families/support network know that I will support which ever decision they make.
